Ice-Cream Makers: Make your own ice-cream

Posted on: February 26, 2011

Ice-cream makers have been popular for a while now; they have developed to the extent that you don't need to wait 3 or 4 hours for your ice-cream to be set for the dinner. There are 2 different kinds on the market; there is the hand-operated type that requires little physical effort o make dessert and there is the slightly more expensive electric type which makes the process much smoother.

The manual ice-cream maker may be time consuming and a bit untidy when preparing ice-cream; it features a large bowl that carries a smaller bowl within it; this is where the hand cranking mechanics can be found. You fill the outer bowl with ice and salt to offer the cooling force, during the action of the salt thawing the ice, it contracts the heat away from the cream in the inside trough causing it to freeze.

One slight handicap with a manual ice-cream maker can be that after the salt has melted the ice it leaves you with salt water in the outer bowl, which you have to dispose of before you start another batch.

The pricier electric ice-cream maker is much easier to use; it is not as messy as the manual ice-cream maker and you can make your dessert in 20 to 30 minutes with certain types of machines. With some electric makers you need to place the bowl in the freezer for the procedure to work; this needs time and could be an issue if you do not have enough room in the freezer.

If you wish for the simplest means to prepare your do-it-yourself desserts, then a standalone unit would be the ideal pick. This type of equipment has everything built in; you merely add your ingredients and switch it on get on with your other work while the machine prepares your ice- cream.

These units can be moderately large and occupy some room in your kitchen, so make sure you have room for it before you buy the machine. The reason for this is that some machines can't be displaced for 12 hours as this disturbs the cooling mechanics in the machine; you would generally keep this type of maker at a permanent spot in your kitchen. They are costlier than other machines on the market, but for the time preserved and ease of usage it may be worth spending the extra money.

The finest thing about owning your personal ice-cream maker is that you can produce a great ice-cream with the ingredients and flavors of your choice; there are tried and tested formulas out there that you could apply but why not be original and sample different ingredients and flavors to prepare that special dessert your household or guests will love?
